Re-Use Practices (RUPs)

Refineries and petrochemical plants evaluating refinery conversion or equipment repurposing for renewable fuels and biodiesel rely on Equity’s Re-Use Practices (RUPs). Covering metallurgical analysis, equipment rerating, modification design, and foundation evaluation across 60+ documents, the RUPs reduce renewable fuels conversion startup risk while maintaining process safety management (PSM) and management of change (MOC) compliance. Available through the Equity Engineering Practices® platform.

Determine the Feasibility of Repurposing Equipment

The Re-Use Practices (RUPs) support refineries or petrochemical plants evaluating how to repurpose or reuse assets for new operating conditions, renewable fuels, and biodiesel. The RUPs are available through the Equity Engineering Practices® (EEPs) platform.

Drawing on Equity’s industry experience and SME knowledge, the RUPs cover the full scope of repurposing work: analyzing metallurgy for changes in service, reviewing equipment histories, rerating equipment, designing necessary modifications, and evaluating existing foundations and structures for the new loads.

  • Increase reliability of equipment reuse
  • Reduce risk when starting up new service
  • Develop consistent documentation for PSM and MOC protocols
  • Safely extend the useful life of equipment

What are the Re-Use Practices?

The RUPs contain more than 60 documents across all disciplines and provide the protocols owner-users need to conduct efficient and reliable repurposing projects.

Subscribers have access to evaluation requirements for fixed and rotating equipment, piping, storage tanks, instrumentation and controls, and structures. The RUPs also include materials review, operations review, inspection and maintenance history reviews, and financial evaluation of replacement versus modification.

Document Types Available

  • Re-Use Management Documents: Detailed descriptions and methodology for the re-use evaluation process; the framework for conducting a structure repurposing assessment.
  • Checklists: Outline tasks to be performed and keep track of progress at each stage of the evaluation.
  • Worksheets: Step-by-step instructions for data collection and approvals, keeping teams aligned and accountable throughout the project.
