Case Study: Piping Vibration Study to Improve Reliability

Industry: Mining
Type of Asset: Metal Processing Refinery
Location: Canada

Issue: The failure of a complex BAHX resulted in a loss of containment and significant downtime at the terminal. The client was unclear what caused the failure and what the risk levels were for potential failures in similar equipment.

Solution: We provided immediate on-site support to help the company’s internal investigation into the failure. While on site, we collected samples for a metallurgical analysis and performed an expedited failure analysis. The analyses confirmed the suspected cause of failure – thermal fatigue along with other damage mechanisms observed but not immediately responsible for the failure. As a result, we identified fabrication practices, operating modes, and past repairs that also played a significant role in the failure.

Result: Our team developed an engineering practice for the client to mitigate similar failures. Based on the robust engineering practices, the client realized increased reliability in the operation of the BAHX equipment and increased confidence in similar equipment at other facilities.

Storage Tank RBI Assessment

Industry: Downstream Oil & Gas
Type of Asset: Aboveground Sulfuric Acid Storage Tank
Location: Ontario, Canada

Issue: This project involved a standard aboveground storage tank (AST) RBI assessment on four tanks, plus an additional non-conventional qualitative analysis of three critical components in each tank that were vital to the plant’s operation but had been determined to have exceeded the client’s acceptable financial risk threshold.

Solution: We performed an RBI assessment on the four ASTs and the three critical components in each tank. We utilized several similarly non-conventional approaches, including calculating a fracture thickness based on the loads, as well as consideration for the concern of erosion rather than corrosion on the plug valve nozzle leading to an extremely high estimated corrosion rate. Due to the highly effective inspection history and weld build-up actions taken previously, the plug valve nozzle was determined to not require inspection for over a decade.

Result: Corrosion under insulation (CUI) inspections were recommended for the four tanks at the next available opportunity, as well as inspection on the tank floors and inlet acid piping within three years, inspection of the plug valve rods within eight years, and inspection of the plug valve nozzles in about 14 years. Without RBI, these high COF tanks and their critical components would have required full inspection of all components within the next three to five years, an incredibly costly difference that highlights the monetary value of utilizing RBI.
